Happy Thanksgiving

No day off though. We had a tough set this morning, to make up for having the afternoon off I guess.

Theres is a meaning behind the Thanksgiving holiday, but basically its all about food. We had breakfast at the Northern most Denny's in the world. Now my challenge is to go to the Southern most (I think its either in Chch or Dunedin). Although I doubt the Denny's in Nz will have reindeer omelet...

Theres a thanksgiving Basketball tournament in town so I'll be off to watch that before its Turkey time! Remember to wear pants with a bit of room.

Flag Ceremony

As the first student from New Zealand to attend UAF, I had to do a speech in front of about 10 people.

Just keeping you up to date. Nothing much is happening racing wise at the moment. We are just training until we head to Washington state at the start of December. When I know more about that, I'll let you know.

Heres some pics from the meet against Loyola, a lot of me swimming the 1000 and 500. sorry.

Swim meet photos by UAF

Heres an article that was in the local newspaper, after our 4 meets we are ranked 19th for Div 2 teams in the country with heaps of the girls making top 25 lists.

Nanooks ranked in Div11 poll

Ghost cars

It has been getting below 20c at night and that means things are starting to freeze, in particular, cars. So if you have a car you have to plug it in. No they are not electric cars (9/10 cars are dodge ram pickup trucks anyway) they just have a cord sticking out the front.

You plug them into these things. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but someone told me they go in 15 minutes cycles. 15 of heating up the car so the oil and petrol don't freeze in the tank, and 15 minutes off. You'd better have snow tyres too or you'll have a fun time getting down the highway.

The funniest thing is the ghost cars. Somehow you can turn your car on with the remote from far away so it starts running to heat up. You have to do this for about 10 minutes before you actually want to drive anywhere. Cars are siting in the park park with no one in them. That will take a bit of getting used to!

Snow can be fun

Storm

Basically there was a bad storm and now everything is icy. Lots of people in town lost power and some trees fell down around the place.
"Because of ongoing weather conditions, downed trees and widespread power outages in the area, I encourage employees and students to use their own judgment about whether to travel to campus for work or to attend class."
This is part of a long as email we got saying don't go to class if you cant make it. Classes after 5pm were cancelled on Thursday and lots we cancelled during the day, as well as today (Friday). None of which were mine, so lucky I studied for my calculus test.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, its misty, snowy rain!

A nice new layer of snow this morning. It's been snowing all day and heaps classes have been cancelled because its not safe to drive.

Just a giant pile of snow

Icicle

I can't tell you whether or not it heated up to -16 because honestly, you can't tell the difference between -22 and -16. Good news is, once it starts to snow that means it's warming up. Alaska.

8am

Still dark and it's just after 8 am. This is a pretty creepy start to the day- today being Halloween. We are losing almost 7 minutes of daylight per day and yesterday was exactly 8 hours long. New Zealand is gaining 2 minutes a day and already has 14 hours of sunshine as a comparison.

Frosty bike seat. Nice!

Good haul.
And there was some leftover this morning downstairs. Who's going to see you steal candy at 5am I asked myself.
